Dhanbad (Hindi: धनबाद, Bengali: ধনবাদ) is a city on the central part of the state of
Jharkhand in eastern India. It covers an area of 2,052 sq km (792 sq mi). With a population of 1.2 million people, it is the 2nd largest city in Jharkhand, the 42nd largest in India and one of 53 Indian cities with a population exceeding a million.
The economy of Dhanbad centers around coal production. Several huge companies are based here to operate the Dhanbad coal mines. The history of Dhanbad as an independent district began as recently as 1956. Before that, it was part of the district of Manbhum.
