Gulbarga is a city on the northern part of
Karnataka state, India. It is near the border with Maharashtra to the north and Andhra Pradesh to the east.
The history of the Gulbarga can be traced to the 6th century, when the Rashtrakutas ruled over the area. The city itself came much later. It was founded by the Bahmani Sultans in the 14th century and was chosen to be the capital of the Bahmani Sultanate.
In the 17th century, the Mughals under Emperor Aurangzab conquered the Deccan, and Gulbarga came under the Mughal Empire. After the death of Aurangzab, the Mughal Empire began to disintegrate, and Gulbarga came under the rule of the Nizams, within Hyderabad State. The state existed until the independence of India in 1947. It was one of the princely states that was allowed to exist alongside British India by ceding some control over to the British.
Today Gulbarga holds a number of historic monuments, though many are not is a good state of preservation.
