Guntur City (Telegu: గుంటూరు, Urdu: گنٹور) is a city in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. It covers 63.15 sq km (24.38 sq mi) and has a population of 652,000 people (2012 estimate).
Guntur nhas a long history that goes back to the Kingdom of Pratipalapura in around 500 BC, although in fact the first mention of the city came much later, in around 922 AD. During the colonial period the city was ruled by the French who made Kondavid Fort their headquarters in 1752. The city came under the rule of the Nizam of Hyderabad and Hyder Ali, the de factor ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore, until it came under British in 1788.
Today Guntur has a mix of urban and rural areas. Telegu is the most predominant language here. There are a number of festivals celebrated here, some dating back a thousand years. The city is famous for local specialities such as the Andhra-style meals and breakfast items comprising idli, dosa and puri.
