Gwalior (Hindi: ग्वालियर) is a city on the northern part of the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. With a population of slightly over a million people, it is today the fourth largest city in Madhya Pradesh. The city is a popular tourist destination on account of Gwalior Fort.
Gwalior is practically synonymous with Gwalior Fort, one of the most unscalable and invincible forts of India. Its history goes back to at least the early 6th century. It is renowned as the seat of Jain worship, and for its historic monuments to Hindu architecture. Islam Shah shifted the capital from Delhi to Gwalior in 1545, where it remained until his death in 1553.
