Hubli is one of the major cities in
Karnataka, India. Often called Hubballi, it is the third largest city in the state behind Bengaluru and
Mysore. Hybli is often twinned with the city of Dharwad. The Hubli-Dharwad conurbation, with a population of 980,000 people (2012 estimate), is the second largest in Karnataka after Bengaluru.
The history of Hubli goes back to at least the 15th century. As with many of the major cities in the region, it came under Mughal rule followed by the Maratha rule. The British captured Hubli in 1817. By then, the city has grown into a hub for the textile industry. Even today cotton production continues to be a major backbone of the city's economy, along with the growing of peanuts.
