Indore (Hindi: इन्दौर, Marathi: इंदूर) is the largest city in Madhya Pradesh, India. It covers 526 sq km (203 sq mi) and has a population of close to two million people (2012 estimate), making it the 14th most populous city in India.
As with many of the major cities in India, Indore has a history stretching back hundreds of years. It traces its beginnings to a village called Kampel which during the time of the Mughal Empire began to develop. The founder of present-day Indore is said to be Rao Nandlal Chaudhary, the local landlord.
Indore was one of the princely states which joined the Union of India in 1947. It was made part of the state of Madhya Bharat and served as summer capital of that state until Madhya Bharat was merged into Madhya Pradesh.
