Jammu (Dogri: जम्मू, Urdu: جموں, Punjabi: ਜੰਮੂ) is the winter capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The city has a very ancient history, having been established in the 14th century BC by Raja Jambu Lochan. Due to this, it has today accumulated a high number of temples, making it a pilgrimage destination in India.
The city of Jammu is within the administrative division of Jammu, which comprises the districts of Doda, Kathua, Jammu, Udhampur, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, Samba, Kishtwar and Poonch.
There are several religious festivals celebrated in Jammu every year. At the start of the year, Lohri is celebrated on 13 January, to herald the onset of spring. This is when thousands of devotees take a dip in the holy river. A special dance called the Chajja is also staged.
On 13 or 14 April, Jammu celebrated Baisakhi. This is the harvest festival. Getting married during this time is regarded as auspicious. Twice a year, in March-April and September-October, the Bahu Mela is a festival held at the Kali Temple in Bahu Fort. Other festivals and feast days in Jammu include the Chaitre Chaudash (March-April), Purmandal Mela (February-March), Jhiri Mela (October-November) and Navratri Festival (September-October).

About this website
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
