Katni is a city on the banks of the Katna river in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. Situated 304 m (997 ft) above sea level, it has a population of 222,000 people (2012 estimate). The city has one of the largest railway junctions in India. It also has the largest railyard and the second biggest diesel locomotive shed in the country.
Much of Katni's economy is centered around the rail transportation service. It also has quarries producing marble, lime and minerals such as bauxite. The city is also situated close to the coal fields of central India.
