Kottayam (Malayalam: കോട്ടയം) is a city on the southern part of the state of
Kerala, India. It is also known as Akshara Nagari (അക്ഷര നഗരി), meaning "city of alphabets", for its part in the development of Malayali literature.
The history of Kottayam goes back to the 18th century, when it was ruled by the kingdom of Thekkumkoor. By the 19th century, the British had taken control of the city.
Today Kottayam continues to be a center for the spice trade as well as other commodity crops such as rubber.
