Meghalaya is one of the small states of India. It is wedged betweed Assam to the north and the international border to Bangladesh to the south. The state covers 22,720 sq km (8,772 sq mi) and has a population of around 3 million people (2011 estimate). as with the rest of India, it observes the Indian Standard Time, which is five and a half hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC+5:30).

The capital and largest city in Meghalaya is Shillong, a popular hill station and base for mountain trekking. Meghalaya is hilly with large areas that have remained forested. The forests of Meghalaya are rich in wildlife but have in recent years been threatened by illegal mining.
