Nagpur (Marathi: नागपूर) is a city on the northeastern part of the state of Maharashtra, India. It is regarded as the winter capital of Maharashtra. Nagpur covers 218 sq km (84 sq mi) and has a population of 2.4 million people (2012 estimate). It is the largest city in central India and the third largest in Maharashtra behind Mumbai and Pune.

Nagpur is at the geographic center of India, with the Zero Mile Marker indicating the center of the country located in the city. It was named after the river Nag which flows through it.

Human habitation in the Nagpur area goes back some three thousand years. The presence of Mehir burial sites point to megalithic culture in the area. The earliest mention of Nagpur was in the 10th century.

Modern Nagpur dates to the 18th century. It was founded by Bakht Buland, a prince of the Kingdom of Deogarh-Nagpur. He was succeeded by Chand Sultan. The city later came under the Maratha Empire when an illigitimate son of Bakht Buland tried to usurp the throne, forcing the widow of Chand Sultan to enlist the help of the Maratha leader Raghuji Bhonsle.

The defeat of Raghoji II to the British in the Second Anglo-Maratha War in 1803 brought British rule to Nagpur. The British put his son Raghoji III on the throne as a puppet ruler. When Rajhoji III died without leaving an heir in 1853, the British took control of Nagpur.

Today Nagpur serves as the commercial center for the Vidarbha region. Within Maharashtra state, it has been eclipsed by Mumbai and Pune. Its economy has experienced a number of slowdowns, and civil service remains a major source of employment for its inhabitants.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
