New Delhi Railway Station

New Delhi Railway StationTrain leaving New Delhi Railway Station (14 November, 2004)

The Indian Railway is a fascinating institution that has stirred my curiosity. With 1.6 million employees, it is the world's largest employer. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to view this mammoth organisation at work, and to document the daily life in Indian's railway stations.

The New Delhi Railway Station (GPS: 28.64227, 77.22155) offers a peek at this microcosm. It is huge, like an urban village of its own. Everywhere you look, there was people and train, coming and going from all parts of India. They offer a fascinating photography opportunity, and a kaleidoscope of ever changing human drama. There were people sleeping, vendors hawking foodstuff, each person in his own world, minding his own business.
