Patna is also one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the world. Due to its long history, it is close to pilgrimage sites for various faiths including Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism. Perhaps the most famous of these is Bodhgaya.
Today Patna serves as a commercial centre for agricultural products namely grains, sugar cane, sesame and Patna rice. Hindi is the official language here, though the native tongues include Magadhi and several other dialects. English is also widely understood.
