Ranchi is the capital and third largest city in Jharkhand, India. It covers 175 sq km (67 sq mi) and has a population of 1.1 million people. It is one of the 53 cities in India with a population exceeding a million.
Ranchi was the center of a movement to create a separate state to recognize the Jharkhand identity. This was realized only on 15 November, 2000, when the state of Jharkhand was created from portions of southern Bihar, northern Odisha, western West Bengal and eastern Chhattisgarh. The name Ranchi is said to derive from the village of Archi which was on the site. The name Archi means "bamboo stave:.
Today Ranchi has developed as a healthcare hub of the region. Having said that, though plenty in numbers, the hospitals in Ranchi are not as well-equipped as those in the bigger cities of India. In recent years, the city has also witnessed a retail boom as several shopping centers are opened in the city.
Ranchi Airport receives flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Patna. There are also trains from these cities as well as a few other major cities in India.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
