Sivasagar (Assamese: শিৱসাগৰ) is a city to the northeast of Guwahati, in the state of Assam, India. Formerly written as Sibsagar, the city has a population of around 60,000 people (2012 estimate). Its name means "the ocean of Shiva".
Sivasagar was once the capital of the Kingdom of Ahom from 1699 to 1788. The Ahom Dynasty ruled over Assam for over 600 years until it was brought down by a Burmese attack in 1819. This eventually led to the annexation of Assam into British India in 1826.
Sivasagar has preserved many of its historical monuments from its glorious past. The main feature of the city is Borpukhuri, a water tank built by the Ahom rulers. It spreads over an area of 257 acres (1.04 sq km), and is at a higher level that the city itself. Three major temples are sited on its banks. There are other tanks and man-made lakes in the city including Joysagar, Gaurisagar and Rudrasagar. Also worth exploring are the many other historic sights around the city.

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
