Surat (Gujarati: સુરત) is a fast developing city in Gujarat, India. It is also noted as being one of the cleanest in the country. The Surat metropolitan area covers 326 sq km (126 sq mi) and has a population of 4.46 million people (2012 estimate). It is located on the left bank of the Tapti River, about 306 km to the south of Gandhinagar, the state capital.

Surat is ancient. It was mention in the epic of Mahabharata. The city that we know today is believed to have been established at the end of the 15th century. It was attacked and destroyed by the Portuguese in 1512 and 1530. Nonetheless it rebounded, and grew to become one of the major seaports in the region.

Today Surat has a vibrant economy that is rapidly industrializing. The city is known for its diamond polishing industry as well as for textile and a number of heavy industries. The resulting prosperity has provided a boost to the local property market.

Planning your trip to Surat

Surat was until 2007 the biggest city in the world without its own airport. Its old airport closed down in 2001. The new Surat Airport (STV) opened in 2007 offering flights from Mumbai and Delhi.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
