Blahbatu is a village in Gianyar, Central Bali. It is best known for its landmark giant baby statue which was built in the 1990's. The statue depicts the village giant,
Kebo Iwo, as a baby.
According to the story, the building of the baby statue came about through the urging by the women of a neighboring village, to placate a demon that was claiming the lives of their children.
Blahbatu is also the site of
Vihara Amurva Bhumi Blahbatu, a large Chinese temple whose architecture incorporates elements of Buddhism and Hinduism. The temple was expanded in 1999, and is a center of worship for Chinese Buddhist in Bali.
Also located in Blahbatu is the
Sidha Karya Gong Foundry, which specilizes in Balinese gongs. It was established by renowned gongmaker
I Made Gabeleran.
About three kilometers north of Blahbatu is the village of Kutri. Here, you can find the temple of
Pura Bukit Dharma Kutri, which has statue of the goddess Durga killing a bull. The statue, partly effaced, is believed to date to the 11th century.
