Gelgel is a village in East Bali. It is located about four kilometers to the south of
Klungkung, the present regency capital. It was in Gelgel that Dewa Ketut Ngulesir, son of Bali's first Majapahit king established its royal court in the 14th century.
What remains to reminds us of its glorious past is
Pura Jero Agung, the old royal temple. To the east of Pura Jero Agung is
Pura Dasar, a very old royal temple regarded as the lowland counterpart of Besakih. It has a large outer courtyard and a number of meru shrines. Another temple that you can see in Gelgel is Pura Penataran.
