Gianyar is the administrative center of the regency of the same name in Central Bali. Unlike the surrounding villages, it is more a local town rather than a tourist center. It is a place where the folks from the surrounding villages come to shop for their daily necessities. Of course, there are instances when their daily necessities may also be of interest, such as the things they buy for their religious ceremonies, and the night market that takes place, both of which you can see in Gianyar.

Gianyar is also a place where you can shop for jewelry and hand-woven textiles. During the day time, you can see food stalls near the community hall, Bale Bajar Teges. The specialty of the stalls here is roasted pig, or babi guling.

Puri Gianyar is a noble house. It is located on the northern side of the town square. This residence is not open to the public, but you can take a peek from the outside. What you see is a replica of the original built in the 17th century and destroyed in the earthquake of 1917.

Three kilometers to the southwest of Gianyar is the village of Bona. It has a cottage industry specializing in producing hand-woven wares. Another 2 km to the southwest of Bona is the village of Blega, which produces bamboo furniture.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
