Gilimanuk is a ferry port in West Bali. This is where you can catch a ferry to Java. The ferry here is used mostly by the locals. The streets of the port is lined with open-air eateries, called
warung, used by travelers waiting for the ferry. One of the attractions of Gilimanuk is the huge, elaborately ornate arch welcoming visitors to Bali.
To the north of Gilimanuk, in the village of
Cekik, is
Museum Purbakala, the local archaeological museum. It displays sarcophagi and neolithic tools from a prehistoric funerary site nearby. The discoveries here provided evidence of human habitation in the area going back to the pre-Bronze age. The village of Cekik also houses the headquarters of the
Taman Nasional Bali Barat.
