Pura Goa Lawah (GPS: -8.55156, 115.46886) is a temple in Bali which features a cave inhabited by thousands of bats. Located in the regency of
Klungkung, Goa Lawah is believed to be over a thousand years old. According to legend, the cave stretches for 30 kilometers (19 miles), all the way to
Besakih, and in it resides a giant dragon-like snake called Basuki that eats the bats.
From outside the cave, you can catch a good view of the ocean, and on a clear day, can see all the way until
Nusa Penida and
Lombok.
About four kilometers from Goa Lawah is Kusamba, a small fishing village with black sand beach. You can often find outrigger boats, called
jukung, berthed on the shore. These can be hired for day trips.
