Gunung Agung is the tallest mountain in Bali. It is a stratovolcano that reaches a height of 3,142 meters (10,308 feet). This active volcano is a sacred site for the Balinese who regard it their response to Mount Meru, the mythical center of the universe in Hindu cosmology. As a measure of its importance, the most important temple on Bali, Pura Besakih, sits high on its slopes.
Gunung Agung last erupted in 1964. Today it is still regarded as active, and occasionally belches smoke and ash.
It is possible to climb Gunung Agung, but anyone wanting to attempt it should dress according to temple dress code, as it is a sacred place to the Balinese. You should engage a reliable guide. Climbing can only be done outside the rainy season (Oct-May). Trekkers start at one of two base camps, the Besakih temple of Pura Pasar Agung temple. It takes six hours to reach the peak from Besakih, and three hours from Pura Pasar Agung.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
