Makam Jayaprana is a temple-mausoleum in Teluk Terima, on the western part of Bali. Located on a hillock over the road, the temple affords a panoramic view of the surrounding area. From here, you can see Menjangan Island, Gilimanuk and even Gunung Raung in neighboring Java.
Makam Jayaprana is the mausoleum of I Nyoman Jayaprana, a hero in Balinese folklore. Although a mausoleum stands here overlooking Teluk Terima, whether Jayaprana is a real person or fictitious has not been conclusively proven.
According to the legend, Jayaprana was married to an extremely beautiful woman named Layonsari. The local ruler, Lord Kalianget, wanted to take Layonsari as his wife. To do that, he hatched a plan to get rid of Jayaprana. Alleging that Bugis pirates have landed in Gilimanuk and were on their way to attack his kingdom, Lord Kalianget sent Jayaprana along with his soldiers to repel them. However, the soldiers have been ordered by Lord Kalianget to kill Jayaprana when he reached Gilimanuk.
When Layonsari learned of Jayaprana's death and Lord Kalianget's plot to marry her, she killed herself to join her beloved husband in death.
The mausoleum of Jayaprana has the statues of Jayaprana and Layonsari. It is a popular pilgrimage site for lovers who come here to seek favors and wishes.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
