Negara is the name of the regency as well as administrative town in West Bali. As with many of the settlements on this part of the island, Negara began as a Bugis settlement, and still wears a Bugis appearance to its town center. A walk through town evokes the feeling of walking in Sulawesi. The Bugis community of Loloan is centered on Jalan Gatot Subroto, on both sides of the Ijo Gading River.
In Negara, you can see Bugis style houses with elaborately carved balconies. The most beautiful of these houses can be seen at the end of Jalan Gunung Agung and at Jalan Puncak Jaya. At Loloan, you can see a number of Islamic schools, called pesantren.
The performing art that Negara is noted for is jegog. This is a gamelan orchestra using huge bamboo instruments.
The local sports that you can observe in Negara, between the months of July to October, is a buffalo chariot race called mekepung. In this race, jockeys ride on two-wheeled chariots pulled by a pair of water buffaloes.
Nearby Sights
The west of Negara is the beach of Rening from where you can get scenic views of the mountains of Java. 13 km away from Negara is another excellent beach, at Candi Kusuma. To the north of Negara is the Catholic village of Palasari and the Protestant village of Blimbingsari. These villages were established in the 1930's with land given by the Dutch to Christian converts who became outcast from their own community.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
