Pura Maospahit is the oldest temple in Denpasar, Bali, tracing its history back to the time of the Majapahit Empire, between the 13th and 15th century. The style of architecture of the temple reflects the development during that time.
Pura Maospahit faces Jalan Dr Sutomo. The name is derived from that one of the Balinese deities, Bhatara Maospahit. Although the temple is not open to the public, you can peer at it from the outside to appreciate its marvelous architecture.
It should be noted that there has been modifications from the original. The gate, for example, is not the same as it once was, having been modified over time. The earthquake that struck in the early part of the 20th century has also taken its toll. In fact the only section of the temple that has remained unaltered through the six hundred years of its existence is at the back.
