Sukawati is a village in Gianyar, Bali. It is popular as a handicrafts center. The village has a Pasar Seni, or art market, which is housed in a two-storey complex, next to the farmer's market. This is where you can find all types of handicrafts. There is also a market selling woodcarvings located right behind the complex.
Sukawati has a number of noble houses or
puri. It is also the site of a sacred
wayang kulit (shadow puppet) theatre. Sukawati was the site where in the early 18th century, an offshoot of the royal house of the Kingdom of Klungkung was established here. You can see what remains of the royal palaces at the main intersection in town, with royal temples nearby. These are not open to the public.
