Taro is one of the earliest settlements in Bali. It has a large temple called Pura Gunung Raung. The temple has a three-tier meru pagoda representing Gunung Raung, a mountain in East Java. It was from here that a legendary Javanese sage, Rsi Markandya set out with his followers to Bali, during the 8th century.
Taro is also a producer of Bali's albino cattle, a highly prized animal that is required during important large rituals. Formerly such cattle would be slaughtered in the ceremonies but nowadays they are merely borrowed and then returned thereafter. Nonetheless the cattle is not endangered; they have multiplied greatly and now freely roam the forest south of the village.
Also located at Taro is the
Elephant Safari Park. Here, visitors have the opportunity to ride the Sumatran elephant. They can also watch an elephant painting session and visit an elephant museum.
