Tenganan is a Bali Aga village in East Bali. The Bali Aga communities are regarded as the "original Balinese" that have not embraced the Hindu culture that was brought here by the Majapahit empire in the 14th century.
Bali Aga natives have their own customs. For example, they must marry within the community. Those who marry "outsiders" are required to leave the village. The people of Tenganan support themselves by producing handicrafts such as basketware and a double-
ikat textile called
geringsing.
