Jalan Chain Ferry, Butterworth (11 December 2017)
Jalan Chain Ferry, or Chain Ferry Road, is one of the main roads in
Butterworth,
Penang. It begins at the intersection with
Jalan Sungai Nyior and Jalan Assumption, where it continues as
Jalan New Ferry. At the other end of Chain Ferry Road, it meets the Prai Main Road at an interchange, and continues thereafter as Jalan Perusahaan.
Chain Ferry Road got its name from a chain ferry service across the Prai River. This was before the construction of the
Tunku Abdul Rahman Bridge in 1966. Until then, commuters were ferried across the Prai River on rafts with chains that were pulled across the river. This is in addition to a sampan ferry service operating near the mouth of the Prai River.
