Jalan Cheong Fatt Tze, George Town, Penang (1 January 2014)
Jalan Cheong Fatt Tze, formerly known as
Hong Kong Street, in
Penang Hokkien as Hiang3 Kang1 Kay1

, and written in Chinese characters as 香港街, is one of the roads within the Chinatown area of
George Town, Penang. It links
Carnarvon Street with
Rope Walk. As its former name suggests, the street and immediate vicinity was mostly inhabited by the Cantonese, with Carnarvon Street making the border between the Cantonese and the Hokkiens.
Hong Kong Street was renamed after Cheong Fatt Tze, a Hakka who was one of the most influential personalities in early 20th century Penang. His residence along
Leith Street is known today as the
Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. Cheong Fatt Tze was the founder of Teoh Kongsi located at nearby Carnarvon Street.

The original Cheong Fatt Tze Road is located on the site of Komtar. After it was erased for the Komtar project, members of the Teoh Kongsi wrote to the road naming committee of the Penang Island Municipal Council urging that Hong Kong Street be renamed after Cheong Fatt Tze, in memory of his contribution. This was accepted, and Hong Kong Street was renamed Jalan Cheong Fatt Tze on 22 October, 1992.
The most important sight along Jalan Cheong Fatt Tze is the
George Town Nine Emperor Gods Temple, which was the main temple of the Nine Emperor Gods until the new
Penang Nine Emperor Gods Temple was built at the
Macallum Street Ghaut area.
