Junction of Jalan Haji Hashim Imam with Sungai Pinang Road (6 October 2012)
Jalan Haji Hashim Imam is a country road in the Sungai Pinang area of
George Town, Penang. The L-shaped road connects with the
Jelutong Main Road on one end and with
Jalan Ahmad bin Haji Rahman on the other. In between it intersects with Sungai Pinang Road.
Jalan Haji Hashim Imam was originally a rural road for the Malay settlement of Sungai Pinang, which developed on the south side of
Sungai Pinang. The road was created in the early 20th century, though the Malay settlement traces its beginnings to the pre-Francis Light era, when early Sumatran traders arrived at the estuary of the river. In the third quarter of the 19th century, the Malays there polarised into two factions, resulting in two main mosques in the area,
Masjid Maqbul and
Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang.
Jalan Haji Hashim Imam was named after a religious teacher and imam of the Masjid Jamek Sungai Pinang. His full name is Haji Muhammad Hashim bin Muhammad Salleh (1870-1948). It is laid to rest at the Bayan Lepas Malay Cemetery. Haji Hashim Imam is credited with establishing the Malay settlement in Permatang Damar Laut as well as Kampung Masjid in Bayan Lepas.
