Portrait of Phraya Mano
Jalan Mano, or Mano Road, is a minor road off
Jalan Bagan Jermal, in George Town Penang. It connects Jalan Bagan Jermal with Persiaran Midlands. An off-shoot to the road is called Solok Mano, or Mano Close.
Jalan Mano was named after
Phraya Manopakorn Nititada, who also goes by the name Phraya Mano. He was the first Prime Minister of Siam, though his administrative lasted for just over a year, from 28 June 1932 to 20 June 1933, when he was forced out of office through a coup d'état.
After his removal as prime minister, Phraya Mano went into exile in Penang, which was known as Koh Maak, which means "betelnut island" in Thai. However today Penang is simply known among the Thais as Pinang. He resettled in
Pulau Tikus along with Prince Damrong Rajanubhab and Prince Svasti Sophon. Phraya Mano initially stated in a bungalow at
Burmah Lane, but later Phraya Mano bought land in the Bagan Jermal area, where he lived the rest of his life. He died in Penang and was buried at
Wat Pinbang Onn. Signage was unveiled on 7 July 2012, over his tomb.
Jalan Mano and Solok Mano bore his name. Although the house where Phraya Mano dwelled had been torn down to make way for new housing development, his sister-in-law Madam Praband Sanasen still lived in Solok Mano. She was already 92 years old at the time of writing (July 2012).
