Jalan P. Ramlee (10 July 2022)
Jalan P. Ramlee is a road in the
Caunter Hall neighbourhood of
George Town, Penang. It begins at the junction with
Perak Road and
Jalan Sungai Pinang, and ends at the tiny roundabout with Terengganu Road.
Jalan P. Ramlee was formerly known as Caunter Hall Road. It was named after George Caunter, the
Acting Superintendent of Penang in 1796 and Magistrate in 1797.
Today Caunter Hall Road is renamed Jalan P. Ramlee in honour of Malaysia's most famous entertainer, the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee, whose real name is Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh. P. Ramlee was born in his grandmother's house located an on off shoot of the main road. P. Ramlee is of Acehnese descent, which may be incidental considering Jalan P. Ramlee itself borders on Acehnese settlements that follow the meandering Sungai Pinang River nearby. There is also a
Jalan P. Ramlee in Kuala Lumpur.
Due to the proximity of Sungai Pinang as well as the low level of the area, Jalan P. Ramlee is prone to flash floods.

According to Mr Gary Fernandez, whose mother Penelope Caunter was the last in the line of Caunters, the road was named after a house, called Caunter Hall, that was located along the road. It belonged to William Caunter, son of George Caunter, who was involved in the negotiation with the Sultan of Kedah for the acquisition of Province Wellesley to be part of the British settlement.
