1 has been discovered. The laterite remains (some bearing similarity to the more obscure Angkor ruins, ie. Ak Yum), are said to have dated back to the time of the Langkasuka Empire, a Hindu-Buddhist empire or kingdom that emerged on the Malay peninsula between the 2nd and 15th centuries, before it was supplanted by the Pattani Kingdom. It is regarded as one of the oldest kingdoms to have emerged on the Malay peninsula.
Interest in the Rantau Panjang relics has drawn the attention of the Muzium Department and Universiti Sains Malaysia, with officials from both having made visits to the area, but no further progress is carried out due to lack of funds.
