Jalan Sir Hussein, George Town, Penang (23 September 2012)
Jalan Sir Hussein is a minor road in the
Green Lane area of
George Town, Penang. It is reached via
Jalan Cheeseman. Jalan Sir Hussein connects
Taman Wu Lien Teh in the north with
Jalan Taylor in the south. Also forming junctions with Jalan Sir Hussein are
Gerbang Heah Swee Lee,
Taman Kennedy and
Taman Sir Hussein.
Jalan Sir Hussein was named after Sir Dr. Hussein Hasanally Abdoolcader, a prominent Penang lawyer from the early 20th century. Sir Hussein holds the distinction of being the first Indian Muslim in Malaya to be knighted. The road that bears his name was laid in the 1950s, after which an early housing estate was created there, adjacent to quarters for government servants.
I grew up on Jalan Sir Hussein until I was six years old, when my family moved out, though we kept the property until it was later sold by my mother to
Eden Handicap for work of the disabled.
