Asakura (Japanese: 朝倉市) is a city in the south-central part of
Fukuoka Prefecture, on the island of
Kyushu, in southern
Japan. It covers 247 sq km (95 sq mi) and has a population of 57,500 people (2012 estimate). Asakura is about 49 km to the southeast of downtown
Fukuoka.
The history og Asakura goes back to the 7th century, when the Imperial Court took residence at the Tachibana no Hironiwa Palace in Asakura for a few months. The present city of Asakura dates to 1889, when the municipality was formed from the former town of Amagi along with several surrounding villages.
Over the course of time, the various villages were granted city status until 1954, when Amagi City was formed. Then in 2006, Amagi merged with the town of Asakura and Haki to create the present city of Asakura.
