Atami (Japanese: 熱海市) is a city in
Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. It covers 61.56 sq km (23.77 sq mi) and has a population of 40,000 people (2012 estimate).
Atami is a coastal city on the eastern edge of the Izu Peninsula. The city occupies the slope of a volcanic caldera that is submerged into Sagami Bay. It is famous for its hot springs that has been known since the 8th century AD.
The Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 had its epicenter beneath Izu Oshima Island, with is very near to Atami. Needless to say, it caused severe damage to the city. The modern city was established on 10 April, 1937 by merging Atami Town with Taga Village.

Planning your trip to Atami
Yon can reach Atami from
Tokyo on the Tokaido Shinkansen main land. The journey takes 50 minutes and costs ¥3,570 for an unreserved seat. All Kodama trains stop at Atami while a number of Hikari trains also stop there. You can reach Atami from Shizuoka on the Kodama train in 40 minutes (¥2,960 unreserved seat) and from
Hamamatsu in 70 minutes (¥4,930 unreserved seat).
