Beppu (Japanese: 別府市) is a city to the western coast of Beppu Bay, in
Oita Prefecture, Japan. It occupies an area of 125.13 sq km (48.31 sq mi) and has a population of 126,000 people (2012 estimate).
Beppu is on the northeastern part of
Kyushu Island. It was founded on 1 April, 1924. The city has nine major geothermal hot spots, and is famous for its hot spring spas or
onsen. The city stages the annual Beppu Fireworks Festival, one of the biggest fireworks displays in Oita Prefecture, in late July.

Planning your trip to Beppu
You can fly from major cities in Japan to Oita, and from there take a shuttle bus to Beppu. Alternatively you can take the Sonic limited express train from
Fukuoka's Hakata Station. The journey takes 117 minutes and costs ¥4,290 one way. If you are coming from
Honshu Island, take the Sanyo Shinkansen train to Kokura Station, then switch to the Sonic limited express. The journey from Kokura Station to Beppu is 75 minutes, and costs ¥4,290 one way (no charge if you hold a Japan Rail Pass).
