The history of Date goes back to the Edo period, when it was ruled by the Date clan, which was one of the most influential daimyos of feudal Japan. The Meiji Restoration took away the territories belonging to the samurai. Nevertheless, the city holds historic monuments to the feudal period.
Date is about 60 km (37 mi) northwest of the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant. It is outside the nuclear accident exclusion zone following the 2011 earthquake.
