Echizen (Japanese: 越前市) is a city in
Fukui Prefecture, Japan. It covers 231 sq km (89 sq mi) and has a population of 86,500 people (2012 estimate). The city limits of Echizen date from 1 October, 2005, when the city of Takefu merged with the town of Imadate.
Echizen draws its name from the Echizen Basin, an area that has been inhabited for over a thousand years. The area was part of the Kingdom of Koshi in the Yamato period (ca. 250-710 AD). During the Nara Period, the Kingdom of Koshi broke into three provinces, namely Echizen, Etchu and Echigo. It developed into a military center in the Nanboku-cho period.
The city of Takefu was established in 1948. Over the subsequent elevant years, it absorbed neighbouring villages and grew in area and population. When it merged with Imadate in 2005, it took on the name Echizen.
