Hamamatsu (Japanese: 浜松市) is a city on the western part of
Shizuoka Prefecture in central Japan. It covers 1,511.17 sq km (583.47 sq mi) and has a population of 813,000 people (2012 estimate).
Human habitation in Hamamatsu goes back to prehistoric times, with discovery of artifacts from the Jomon and Kofun periods. It developed as a castle town around Hamamatsu Castle, which was probably built in the 16th century. Hamamatsu was granted city status on 1 July, 1911.

Hamamatsu is on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line and the JR Tokaido Line. It receives trains from Tokyo,
Nagoya and
Osaka. The Kodama service from Tokyo takes 2 hours to reach Hamamatsu while the Hikari takes 90 minutes. Both services cost ¥8,070 for a reserved seat.
