Ito (Japanese: 伊東市) is a city on the Izu Peninsula in
Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. It covers 124.13 sq km (47.93 sq mi) and has a population of 72,000 people (2012 estimate).
Ito dates back to the Edo period, when it was a small fishing village. It was given town status in 1906. Ito was where Japan began building large ships at the turn of the 17th century. The person instrumental in helping the country acquire the boat building knowledge was Englishman William Adams.
