Iwaki (Japanese: いわき市) is a city in the Hamadori region, on the southeastern part of
Fukushima Prefecture,
Japan. The city covers 1,231 sq km (475 sq mi) and has a population of 337,000 people (2012 estimate).
Iwaki is called a hiragana city, one of the cities in Japan whose name is written using the hiragana alphabet rather than the usual kanji characters. It was created in 1966 through the merger of 14 former municipalities. Today it is a major tourist destination in the Tohoku Region, attracting as many as 7.5 million visitors a year prior to the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake. Iwaki was severely devastated by the earthquake and the resulting tsunami.
There are three main festivals staged in Iwaki annually. They are Jangara, Iwaki Odori and the Onahama Firework Festival.
