Kansai is one of the five regions on the island of
Honshu in Japan. Located in the south-central part of Honshu, the Kansai region comprises the prefectures of Hyogo, Kyoto, Mie, Nara, Osaka, Shiga and Wakayama.
Although accounting for just 11% of the land area of Japan, the Kansai region has a population of around 23 million people, making it the second most populous region in Japan after Kanto. This is the region with the highest number of national treasures - of the seven prefectures in Japan with the most national treasures, six are located in the Kansai region.
