Katsuura (Japanese: 勝浦市) is a city on the southeastern part of
Chiba Prefecture, Japan. It is a coastal city facing the Pacific Ocean, and is famous for the Katsuura Fishing Port. The city covers 94 sq km (36 sq mi) and has a population of 20,000 people (2012 estimate).
Katsuura was founded as a village in 1889. It was given town status the following year. After annexing a number of neighboring towns in 1955, Katsuura was given city status on 1 October, 1958.
Katsuura has one of the top three largest morning markets (
asa ichi) in Japan. The market is basically a fish market where various fish and shellfish are on sale from early morning until 11:00 am.

Planning your trip to Katsuura
Katsuura is served by the Sotobo Line of the East Japan Railway. The train stops at the Katsuura, Ubara, Kazusa-Okitsu and Namegawa Island stations. You can also reach the city by road, taking Japan National Routes 128 or 297.
