Mutsu (Japanese: むつ市) is a city on the Shimokita Peninsula, on the northern part of
Aomori Prefecture, in northern
Honshu Island, Japan. The city covers 864 sq km (334 sq mi) and has a population of 60,000 people (2012 estimate). It faces the Tsugaru Strait to the north and Mutsu Bay to the south, and shares borders with Kazamaura, Oma, Higashidori, Sai and Yokohama municipalities.
The city of Mutsu was formed only in 1959 when the towns of Ominato and Tanabu were merged. Ominato had a naval base for the Imperial Japanese Navy until the end of the Second World War. It was then occupied by the US Navy and now, on a much reduced scale, the Japan Maritime Self Defence Force. The economy of Mutsu is based on farming, forestry and fishing.
