Today Aoyama is one of the most popular entertainment and shopping precincts of Tokyo for young people, along with
Shibuya and
Harajuku.
Aoyama has Japan's first municipal cemetery, the Aoyama Reien, established in 1872. Among those buried here is General Nogi Maresuke, who committed suicide with his leader when Emperor Meiji passed away in 1912.
