Arakawa (荒川区) is a special ward of Tokyo Metropolis, named after the Arakawa River. It covers 10.2 sq km and as of 1 April 2011, has an estimated population of 205,263. The city is bordered by
Adachi,
Kita,
Bunkyo,
Taito and
Sumida.
Arakawa was a farming district during the Edo period. Even earlier than that, it was the site of Kozukappara, the largest execution ground of the Tokugawa shogunate, located next to where the Minami-Senju station is today.
