Uji City (Japanese: 宇治市_ is a city in
Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. It is located on the southern outskirts of Kyoto. Located by the banks of the Uji River, the city is famous in Japan for growing some of the best green tea in the country. With a population of 193,000, it is the second largest city in Kyoto Prefecture.
There are a few sights in Uji worth visiting. Two of these,
Ujigami Shrine and
Byodo-in, are World Heritage Sites listed as part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. The Amida Hall (Phoenix Hall) of Byodo is featured on the reverse side of the 10-yen coin.
