Yachimata (Japanese: 八街市) is a city on the north-central part of
Chiba Prefecture, on
Honshu island,
Japan. It covers 75 sq km (29 sq mi) and has a population of 72,000 people (2012 estimate).
During the Edo period, Yachimata was the site the Tokugawa shogunate raised horses. The city itself began as a hamlet in 1872. It was officially designated a village in 1889, then a town in 1919. Through expansion and mergers, it was eventually given city status in 1992. Today the city is renowned for its production of peanuts, pears and watermelons.
